The stores around here sell out of black-eyed peas towards New Year's. You have to buy them early! I bought mine at the beginning of the week, and there were only a couple of bags left on the shelf!

Black-eyed peas and greens on New Year's are a Southern tradition. There are plenty of places in the US where people don't do that.
I would gladly share my recipe, though it isn't anything special. I basically soak the peas overnight, then drain them and start over with some kind of seasoned meat. Generally I use the ham left over from Christmas day, and maybe cut up an onion, use a little garlic, and boil everything until the peas are tender. But I did have another recipe I used for a while there, more of a black-eyed pea salad with a vinaigrette dressing, because my husband doesn't really like them and I was trying to find something he'd enjoy more. I believe I used the canned peas (drained) for that.
You can also use bacon or left-over ham to season the greens, or you can boil them in broth (maybe use chicken bouillon).
I also make cornbread (no sugar; we call sweet cornbread "Yankee cornbread" around here, and that's not a good thing).
Southern Living magazine generally has recipes for traditional stuff like this, often with a new twist to make it a little more sophisticated. You might try their web site and see what you find there.
