What is your take on remakes? Are the new ones better than the old ones or just different?

I hate remakes and usually all sequals, except Hellraiser 2 and the Toy Story movies. LOL!

I think most sequels to Halloween movies are disappointing. In general, I never expect sequels to live up to their originals, although there are some exceptions, like the Toy Story movies. (I think, though, that the creators of Toy Story had conceived of all three movies from the beginning. They were intending to show the "life cycle" of a toy, from one generation to the next.)
I'm a big fan of the 1950s epic Ben Hur, which was actually a remake of a very successful silent film from the '20s. So sometimes, I guess, the remakes can eclipse the originals. More recently, I thought the remake of True Grit was every bit as good as the original, and arguably better, since it stuck closer to the novel.

Remakes that try to be too similar are usually the worst. The best ones are like the Dawn of the Dead remake, where you take the name and the general idea (zombies and a mall) and you make a completely different movie out of it.
Why anyone would want to re-cast Freddy Kruger is beyond my comprehension.

I know I'm probably in the minority, but I loved what Rob Zombie did with Halloween. My favorite franchise horror is Friday the 13th, and the remake was ok. The original probably can't be beat. I thought Amityville was a great remake too. But if I had to choose one, I'll go with Halloween and Halloween 2 by Zombie.

It seems to me that there is so much original material out there for new movies that re-makes should be unnecessary - and I don't think an iconic movie should ever be touched (prequels and sequels notwithstanding).

One of our TV stations specializes in showing old movies, and last weekend, they were showing old horror movies. In particular, they showed a 1930s version of The Mummy. We are very familiar with the '90s version, so we enjoyed comparing them. They were not altogether similar, but it was clear to us that the later movie paid homage to the earlier one in several sly ways. That sort of remake, decades apart, can be fun.

I'm not a big fan of remakes to be quite honest with you.
I didn't mind 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre' remake - although I do prefer the original ALOT more!
I personally didn't enjoy the 'Halloween' remakes - but that might be because I love the original so much. It's my favourite horror movie ever!
I hated the remake of 'A Nightmare on Elm Street'. I enjoyed the original 'Prom Night' & thought the remake was an absolute joke!
I havn't seen the remake of 'The Fog', but i've heard it's bad!
That's to name a few of the remakes i've seen.
At the end of the day though, each to there own.

I am old school and always perfer the originals over sequel with exception of Bride of Frankenstien! I will always see a remake on horror movies and give it a chance, some work, and some dont! Sequels that is

The only sequel that immediately comes to mind that was better was Aliens. I thought Rob Zombie did a pretty good job with Halloween--I was pleasantly surprised because I hated House of 1000 Corpses so much and didn't even bother with The Devil's Rejects. However, he really took Halloween to a dark place with the development of Michaels psychopathy and I found it a little tough to sit through. I generally don't care for re-makes but I do like the new Fright Night and the Wolfman better than the originals. To me, they were just more fun to watch. I'm also looking forward to The Thing
