I'm not familiar with Dresden Files, but my husband and I really liked Now & Again. My older son discovered Firefly on the internet after it was cancelled and loved it so much that he put a poster of it up on his dorm room wall.

What I don't get is, that, these shows have decent ratings and they don't go beyond a series or two.

I've never understood why some shows aren't given a chance and others are kept on the air forever.

If I had to guess why, I would imagine that maybe, script writing could be an issue. You have to be creative and keep the audience intrigued. That must be difficult. Maybe secondly, budget? Who knows.

I think budget does play into it a lot. Some shows are more expensive to produce than others, and all scripted dramas are more expensive than the (un)reality shows, which is why our air waves have been flooded with them.

I think Dresden Files was canceled because it didn't jive with Jim Butcher's novels... and they didn't have the fan base they needed to continue the show.
I'd read the first couple books in the series and watched the first two episodes of the show. Wow... the show was NOT worth it. They took too many liberties-- changed my favorite character, Bob, too. Grrr.
